Ok, we've been discussing (offline) the death penalty and torture.  I was told this morning that I don't really support torture, I've just been baited into saying I do.  I don't think so.

Here's the deal -
- what is "torture" in one culture isn't necessarily "torture" in another culture.  The issue was raised when Iran flogged a serial killer 100 times and then hung him from a crane - deliberately designed to choke him to death rather than the quick neck breaking of the Old West.

I am all for a sovereign nation setting their own crimes and the resulting punishments.  This guy was a serial killer - he killed at least 20 children.  He knew what would happen if he got caught, and he continued to kill children.  He knew the consequences of his actions and he chose to act.  Why is there an issue with expecting him to accept the consequences?

Also, why do you think we have the right to dictate to another SOVEREIGN NATION how they treat their criminals?  The Democrats were all about making global friends during the election.  You aren't going to win global friends by telling other countries what they can and can't do within their own borders.  Especially with their citizens who commit crimes in their country.

Finally, please note that "torture" is different for different cultures.  To tell me that I don't support "torture" because everbody agrees it is evil with a capital E is simply bizarre.  I support Iran punishing a serial killer according to the laws of Iran.  I support Singapore caning criminals according to Singapore laws.   I support nations whacking off the hands of thieves in accordance with their laws.  Does that mean I support mindless torture of innocents?  NO.  It means that I believe that you shouldn't do the crime if you can't do the time.  We aren't talking about torture here, we are talking about crime and punishment.

Be responsible for your actions.  If you kill 20 children in a country that allows flogging and slow executions, expect to be flogged and slowly executed.  If you don't want to be flogged and executed, don't kill children.

For a bunch of "build international agreement" types, it is amazing to me that you have so little respect for the laws of other countries and cultures.

PS - it could be considered torture to force a Saudi to drink liquor and watch porn.  Does that mean I support torture if I don't believe in prohibition and support the First Amendment?  Lord, I need a drink.  Whoops.  Wait, Jack Daniels is torturing me!  Help!
