Anyone who has travelled in Europe or Asia has seen a diversity of small cars unlike anything sold in the United States. Narrow city streets designed for pedestrians and horse drawn wagons are a perfect fit for the skinny Mercedes A-Class and its peers. Europeans have long known what Americans are just starting to recall — little cars sip gas and save money. While rumors of imports of these little gems have circulated for some time, they have failed to materialize until now.
After selling the vehicle in Europe for two years, Mazda has introduced the Mazda5 to the US. The car looks much like a miniature version of the Honda Odyssey pictured below. It seats 6 passengers in three rows and features sliding doors on both sides.
Mazda's car weighs in a thousand pounds less than the Honda, and gets about 15% better mileage with an EPA estimated 22 mpg in city driving. European safety ratings place the vehicle at the head of its class, but US scores have not yet been tallied. American families looking for a microvan may have finally found one.

According to its mission statement, the, " Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was founded in 1945 by scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago and were deeply concerned about the potential future use of nuclear weapons and nuclear war. " The organization is probably most widely know for its Doomsday Clock, an indicator of how close (quite close) the nuclear armed world is to its own nuclear immolation.
This month's issue of the Bulletin presents a map based upon a recently declassified study known as the Nuclear Attack Planning Base 1990. The map shows the probable levels of radiation in the United States after a Soviet nuclear attack. (Clicking on the map shows somewhat greater detail.)
